Mission
We advocate for equitable representation for youth involved in the criminal justice system, emphasizing the importance of addressing harm through restorative justice practices. This approach not only facilitates healing for all parties involved but also acknowledges the potential for personal growth and rehabilitation among young individuals. It is essential that restorative justice becomes a standard practice, enabling youth to learn from their actions while fostering a supportive community. Implementing these principles can lead to more constructive outcomes, promoting accountability and understanding rather than punitive measures. Our commitment is to uphold these values and ensure that youth receive the fair treatment they deserve.
Goals
Building a network of trained restorative justice facilitators and pro bono legal representation can provide invaluable support to youth in our community, particularly in the areas that Santa Barbara Teen Legal Clinic (SBTLC) specializes in. While SBTLC does not provide representation for criminal charges, it offers assistance in several essential legal domains, including:
Family Law: Addressing issues like emancipation, custody, and visitation critical for youth navigating challenging home situations.
Education Law: Supporting students facing suspensions, expulsions, or needing assistance with special education services ensures that their educational rights are upheld.
Immigration Law: Assisting youth with immigration-related matters is essential, especially for those who may be facing uncertainties regarding their status.
By fostering a collaborative network of trained facilitators, we can create restorative justice programs that empower youth to resolve conflicts positively and constructively. Pro bono legal representation can further ensure that the youth have access to knowledgeable advocates who can guide them through complex legal processes. This combined effort can lead to a more supportive environment, promoting healing, accountability, and positive outcomes for the young people in our community.

Focused on criminal cases involving juveniles who have committed offenses - providing an alternative to the traditional juvenile criminal court and educational systems. This project brings together the person who has been harmed and the person who is accused of causing the harm to design an acceptable resolution. Supported by effective mediators the restorative justice circle is monitored and the reparative agreement is completed.
